Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons
Escadrilles canadiennes de plaisance

We have a variety of interesting and practical boating courses. These courses are offered by local squadrons in a supportive fun atmosphere. They are also available through our Distance Education programs. This page provides a brief overview and comparison . For a detailed description of each course, click on it's name.

Introductory courses:

The following two courses are considered introductory in that successful completion qualifies you to join our 30,000 members as either an associate or regular member.

As they say, membership has its privileges, which you can find on our main web site.

Boat Pro is our Boating Proficiency course which leads to you taking the exam for the  Pleasure Craft Operator Card (P.C.O.C) as required by the Canadian Coast Guard. Completing this course allows to become an Associate Member of CPS-ECP

Boating is the premier boating course available. It covers the same material as BoatPro, which also leads to the P.C.O.C but goes beyond those minimal requirements. We say that the P.C.O.C. will get you safely away from the dock - but you'll find that Boating and our other courses will help you get back. Completing this course allows you to become a full member of CPS-ECP.

The following 3 courses are restricted to members only. To become a full member of the Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons you must pass the  exam for the Boating course.

Piloting

As a CPS-ECP Boating Course graduate, you expect more from your boating experiences. You plan next year’s season to be better than ever.  Our advanced level courses further your pleasure by strengthening your boating skills. The Piloting Course extends the navigation and vessel-handling techniques introduced in the Boating Course. The course presents the three aspects of piloting: Navigation   & Plotting Skills, Seamanship Skills, and Boat Capabilities & Performance:

Advanced Piloting

You will be taken out of the realm of conning and visual plotting to coastal cruising out of sight of land, navigating in tidal waters, dealing with current, standing clear of danger, and determining position by visual observation or with the use of electronic devices.

Celestial Navigation

For the modern navigator, there are electronic systems such as Global Positioning System (GPS), Long Range Navigation (Loran), photoenhanced digital charts, and other navigational aids. We all want the convenience and accuracy of electronic navigational aids, but a prudent navigator will never attempt a long voyage without the knowledge and skills of celestial navigation.

Public Courses

These courses are open to everyone, member and non member alike

Maritime Radio (VHF) Seminar Modules 1 & 2   - we are the only organization that provides the course and exam needed to get you your Restricted Operator's Certificate ROC (M) which you must have to operate a VHF radio on your boat. New in 2005 is the second module for qualification in DSC/GMDSS
Marine Electronics
The course begins with a review of basic electrical theory and moves on to discussion of the various electrical/electronic systems found on recreational boats.
Marine Maintenance
To many boaters, working on their boat is part of the fun, to say nothing of the savings in costs.
Seamanship Sail
Emphasis is placed on how a sailboat works and the special terminology associated with sailboats and sailing, as well as practical seamanship.
Extended Cruising
To make port successfully after a long sea voyage using your own boat and skills is a great accomplishment.
Fundamentals of Weather
The study of weather is both fascinating and satisfying. The skills you will develop from this course will serve you for a lifetime
Global Weather
Expands on concepts introduced in the Fundamentals of Weather. You may choose to take this course for general interest or because the far horizon tempts you to sail beyond sheltered waters.
Finding Your Way with GPS
Written to help the new users of one of the many hand-held gps receivers, which are becoming more and more common in daily life. Useful to any user, whether a boater or not.
Navigating with GPS
You will find explanations of what makes GPS so effective as a navigational aid, and methods of extracting the maximum navigational information from your equipment.
Distress Signaling Manual
Do you know what mandatory distress signals are required for your boat? Do you know how to use them? Can you signal a distress situation in all conditions (day and night)?
Depthsounders
Will introduce the recreational boater to the various types of echolocation devices that are common on smaller recreational vessels. In it you will find information that is often missing from the manuals and glossy brochures of the market-place
